ON THURSDAY, the metal collectors went out searching, just like any other day. They normally look everywhere, even at dump sites. But during the afternoon search, under the bridge at KwaMashu’s K section, they couldn’t find what they were looking for.Instead, they found a dead baby wrapped in a black rubbish bag!
Apparently, they saw the bag among the rubbish and opened it, hoping it would be something
valuable. But they were shocked to find a dead baby boy.
Resident Nkosinathi Buthelezi (37) said he was on his way to visit friends when he was told by the collectors there was a dead baby under the bridge.
He said: “I thought they were joking. I went under the bridge to see and got the shock of my life when I realised it was a fully developed baby boy.
“I think the mum had a difficult birth because the baby’s neck looked injured.“I think she gave birth at home and when she realised the baby was dead, she threw it away.”He said he called the police station after seeing the baby.
“Other residents came out to witness the discovery,” he said.“But no one knows who could have done this.“They said no one in the area had been pregnant.”
Resident Ntombi Mchunu (34) said they suspect the person who dumped the baby may be from another area.
“Perhaps she thought no one would find the baby since there is a lot of rubbish under this bridge,” she said.
Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that a baby was found at a dumping area and that it was in the early stages of rotting.
“KwaMashu police are investigating a case of concealment of birth and no arrest has been made at this stage,” said Gwala.
