MOLOTO Road in Mamelodi, Tshwane, was closed to traffic on Tuesday, forcing motorists to use alternative routes, after a cash-in-transit vehicle was robbed.

Cops are now hunting for an unknown number of suspects.

Gauteng cops spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the thugs were driving two getaway cars.

They fled with the guards’ firearms and cash after blowing the armoured vehicle open with explosives. None of the guards was injured“They took an undisclosed amount of cash and sped away,” he said.

Dlamini said the SBV guards couldn’t say what kind of getaway cars the thugs were driving.“They said they were ambushed and were not aware of how many thugs were present at the scene.”

Meanwhile, motorists were not happy about the closed road and said this was inconveniencing them.“We had to use longer routes and didn’t have enough petrol,” said one motorist.

Another motorist said the robbers should be arrested.“These things happen all the time and the police just close the road and nothing is done afterwards,” said the second motorist.“This time around, they need to be found.”

Cops are investigating and have appealed to anyone with information to phone Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
