Saying that most teenage girls in South African schools are already engaging in sexual activities, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga revealed on Thursday afternoon that the rate of young girls falling pregnant while they are still in school increases every year.
“The situation is getting worse every year and we have realised there is nothing we can do about it. We have therefore decided to let young people live in the moment and enjoy themselves as much as they can.
Parents don’t also play their role and condoms can feel uncomfortable sometimes, so young people just do what they want and they fall pregnant. They don’t worry about protection, that’s how they end up making babies. We were young once, that’s how we know this.” Motshekga said.
” We are not saying that teen pregnancy is a problem, young people must enjoy themselves but they must not have too many kids. Sassa can’t raise your kids for you. ” she said.
